Google’s Reader has been updated:

Earlier this week we pushed out a new release of Reader. Most of the changes are under the hood and should make for a faster, smoother experience. However, there were a few user interface tweaks too.

Shrook 2.4
October 21st, 2005

The big new feature is Learning Groups, which learn by example. Drag items onto one and it’ll find similar items for you. While they work great for gathering items on the same topic, note that they are only based on keywords. If you create a “Stuff I’m interested in” group and just drag random items onto it, it probably won’t do anything useful.

Shrook is a next-generation news reader that is not only easy to use, but offers advanced features not available to Mac users anywhere else.

You can now rate RSS readers
October 18th, 2005

I’ve added a rating engine to the main area of Feed Readers, so you can now rate your favourite (or least favourite) apps. Once there is enough ratings, I’ll add a “Best Rated” page which will reflect your votes and will also have effect on the “Best RSS Readers” section. A review engine is coming soon too.

If you have any comments or suggestions, such as inclusion of new apps or things you’d like to see on the site, please send them to suggest at feed-readers dot com or post a comment below.

Thanks!

Taskable - an RSS and OPML browser
October 13th, 2005

Taskable is a new kind of RSS and OPML browser built into the Windows taskbar notification area. Clicking on the “little orange guy” (have a better icon? We kind of like his XML-orange-ness) provides always-on, instantaneous access to your favorite feeds from simple menus that can be traversed with the keyboard or the mouse.

Bloglines introduces Hotkeys
October 13th, 2005

Bloglines today rolled out some new features:

Hotkeys
If you prefer using your keyboard to mousing around, you’ll be happy to know that Bloglines has added shortcut keys. You will find a keyboard shortcut legend at the bottom of each feed display page.

Unread vs. Keep As New
There’s a difference between “Unread” articles and those marked “Keep as New” (subtle, but distinct), so you will now see two numbers next to your subscribed feeds in parentheses. The number to the left of the colon represents the articles you have not read/seen before, and the number on the right represents the articles you have manually kept new.

Mobile
For those who enjoy using Bloglines on the run, there are a couple of features from Bloglines to the Mobile edition:

  • First, you can now access enclosure links in blog articles, allowing you to view images or listen to your favorite podcasts from your mobile device.
  • Second, you can now use the “Keep as New” option for articles you have previously read, allowing you to scroll through as many articles as you want and come back to them later.

Universal Inbox
Continuing the rollout of “unique-to-me” features like weather and package tracking, Bloglines have partnered with Astrology.com to deliver daily, weekly and monthly horoscopes, and Lottery.com to bring you lottery winning numbers and jackpot values for any state in the USA.

Google Testing Online RSS Reader
October 7th, 2005

Google took the covers off a Web based RSS reader at the Web 2.0 conference in San Francisco today. The tool, appropriately dubbed Google Reader, serves as an aggregator for Web feeds and is designed much like the company’s Gmail service with labels, starred favorites and keyboard shortcuts. Google Reader is a browser-based application that works with virtually all popular browsers on Windows, Mac and Linux platforms.

“We often get asked how anyone’s supposed to keep up with the firehose of stuff launched from the web’s spigot, so we’re offering Reader as a way to help,” explained Google software engineer Chris Wetherell. “Like the Personalized Homepage, it’s a part of Google’s ongoing effort to bring together personalized web content to make information more relevant to users.”
